Evening Prayer 2nd March 2017

Chad of Lichfield, Bishop, 672

THE PREPARATION

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Let your ways be known upon earth,
your saving power among the nations.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

Psalm 37.19-40

  1. They are not put to shame in evil times,
    in the days of famine they have abundance.
  2. But the wicked perish,
    and the enemies of the Lord are like the glory of the pastures;
    they vanish—like smoke they vanish away.
  3. The wicked borrow, and do not pay back,
    but the righteous are generous and keep giving;
  4. for those blessed by the Lord shall inherit the land,
    but those cursed by him shall be cut off.
  5. Our steps are made firm by the Lord,
    when he delights in our way;
  6. though we stumble, we shall not fall headlong,
    for the Lord holds us by the hand.
  7. I have been young, and now am old,
    yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
    or their children begging bread.
  8. They are ever giving liberally and lending,
    and their children become a blessing.
  9. Depart from evil, and do good;
    so you shall abide for ever.
  10. For the Lord loves justice;
    he will not forsake his faithful ones.
    The righteous shall be kept safe for ever,
    but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.
  11. The righteous shall inherit the land,
    and live in it for ever.
  12. The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,
    and their tongues speak justice.
  13. The law of their God is in their hearts;
    their steps do not slip.
  14. The wicked watch for the righteous,
    and seek to kill them.
  15. The Lord will not abandon them to their power,
    or let them be condemned when they are brought to trial.
  16. Wait for the Lord, and keep to his way,
    and he will exalt you to inherit the land;
    you will look on the destruction of the wicked.
  17. I have seen the wicked oppressing,
    and towering like a cedar of Lebanon.
  18. Again I passed by, and they were no more;
    though I sought them, they could not be found.
  19. Mark the blameless, and behold the upright,
    for there is posterity for the peaceable.
  20. But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;
    the posterity of the wicked shall be cut off.
  21. The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    he is their refuge in the time of trouble.
  22. The Lord helps them and rescues them;
    he rescues them from the wicked, and saves them,
    because they take refuge in him.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The next day he saw Jesus coming towards him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, “After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.’ And John testified, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.’ (St John 1.29-34)

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: MAGNIFICAT – THE SONG OF MARY

Come, let us return to the Lord,
for our God will richly pardon.

  1. And Mary said,
    ‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
  2. and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
  3. for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.
    Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
  4. for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.
  5. His mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.
  6. He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
  7. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
    and lifted up the lowly;
  8. he has filled the hungry with good things,
    and sent the rich away empty.
  9. He has helped his servant Israel,
    in remembrance of his mercy,
  10. according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
    to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’ (St Luke 1.46-55)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Come, let us return to the Lord,
for our God will richly pardon.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Trusting in the compassion of God,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God,
from the first fruits of the English nation
who turned to Christ,
you called your servant Chad
to be an evangelist and bishop of his own people:
give us grace so to follow his peaceable nature,
humble spirit and prayerful life,
that we may truly commend to others
the faith which we ourselves profess;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
