Evening Prayer 9th March 2017

THE PREPARATION

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Let your ways be known upon earth,
your saving power among the nations.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

Psalm 19

  1. The heavens are telling the glory of God;
    and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
  2. Day to day pours forth speech,
    and night to night declares knowledge.
  3. There is no speech, nor are there words;
    their voice is not heard;
  4. yet their voice goes out through all the earth,
    and their words to the end of the world.
    In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun,
  5. which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
    and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
  6. Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
    and its circuit to the end of them;
    and nothing is hidden from its heat.
  7. The law of the Lord is perfect,
    reviving the soul;
    the decrees of the Lord are sure,
    making wise the simple;
  8. the precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
    the commandment of the Lord is clear,
    enlightening the eyes;
  9. the fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring for ever;
    the ordinances of the Lord are true
    and righteous altogether.
  10. More to be desired are they than gold,
    even much fine gold;
    sweeter also than honey,
    and drippings of the honeycomb.
  11. Moreover by them is your servant warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.
  12. But who can detect their errors?
    Clear me from hidden faults.
  13. Keep back your servant also from the insolent;
    do not let them have dominion over me.
    Then I shall be blameless,
    and innocent of great transgression.
  14. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be acceptable to you,
    O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 46

  1. God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
  2. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
    though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
  3. though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
    Selah
  4. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
  5. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;
    God will help it when the morning dawns.
  6. The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
  7. The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our refuge.
    Selah
  8. Come, behold the works of the Lord;
    see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
  9. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields with fire.
  10. ‘Be still, and know that I am God!
    I am exalted among the nations,
    I am exalted in the earth.’
  11. The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our refuge.
    Selah

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.’ (St John 3.16-21)

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: MAGNIFICAT – THE SONG OF MARY

Come, let us return to the Lord,
for our God will richly pardon.

  1. And Mary said,
    ‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
  2. and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
  3. for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.
    Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
  4. for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.
  5. His mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.
  6. He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
  7. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
    and lifted up the lowly;
  8. he has filled the hungry with good things,
    and sent the rich away empty.
  9. He has helped his servant Israel,
    in remembrance of his mercy,
  10. according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
    to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’ (St Luke 1.46-55)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Come, let us return to the Lord,
for our God will richly pardon.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Trusting in the compassion of God,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God,
whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness,
and was tempted as we are, yet without sin:
give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit;
and, as you know our weakness,
so may we know your power to save;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
