Morning Prayer 11th March 2017

THE PREPARATION

O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Christ, though tempted like us, was without sin.
O come, let us worship.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

Psalm 55

  1. Give ear to my prayer, O God;
    do not hide yourself from my supplication.
  2. Attend to me, and answer me;
    I am troubled in my complaint.
    I am distraught
  3. by the noise of the enemy,
    because of the clamour of the wicked.
    For they bring trouble upon me,
    and in anger they cherish enmity against me.
  4. My heart is in anguish within me,
    the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
  5. Fear and trembling come upon me,
    and horror overwhelms me.
  6. And I say, ‘O that I had wings like a dove!
    I would fly away and be at rest;
  7. truly, I would flee far away;
    I would lodge in the wilderness;
    Selah
  8. I would hurry to find a shelter for myself
    from the raging wind and tempest.’
  9. Confuse, O Lord, confound their speech;
    for I see violence and strife in the city.
  10. Day and night they go around it
    on its walls,
    and iniquity and trouble are within it;
  11. ruin is in its midst;
    oppression and fraud
    do not depart from its market-place.
  12. It is not enemies who taunt me—
    I could bear that;
    it is not adversaries who deal insolently with me—
    I could hide from them.
  13. But it is you, my equal,
    my companion, my familiar friend,
  14. with whom I kept pleasant company;
    we walked in the house of God with the throng.
  15. Let death come upon them;
    let them go down alive to Sheol;
    for evil is in their homes and in their hearts.
  16. But I call upon God,
    and the Lord will save me.
  17. Evening and morning and at noon
    I utter my complaint and moan,
    and he will hear my voice.
  18. He will redeem me unharmed
    from the battle that I wage,
    for many are arrayed against me.
  19. God, who is enthroned from of old,
    Selah
    will hear, and will humble them—
    because they do not change,
    and do not fear God.
  20. My companion laid hands on a friend
    and violated a covenant with me
  21. with speech smoother than butter,
    but with a heart set on war;
    with words that were softer than oil,
    but in fact were drawn swords.
  22. Cast your burden on the Lord,
    and he will sustain you;
    he will never permit
    the righteous to be moved.
  23. But you, O God, will cast them down
    into the lowest pit;
    the bloodthirsty and treacherous
    shall not live out half their days.
    But I will trust in you.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and fix them as an emblem on your forehead. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your ancestors to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.

If you will diligently observe this entire commandment that I am commanding you, loving the Lord your God, walking in all his ways, and holding fast to him, then the Lord will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and mightier than yourselves. Every place on which you set foot shall be yours; your territory shall extend from the wilderness to the Lebanon and from the River, the river Euphrates, to the Western Sea. No one will be able to stand against you; the Lord your God will put the fear and dread of you on all the land on which you set foot, as he promised you.

See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn from the way that I am commanding you today, to follow other gods that you have not known. (Deuteronomy 11.18-28)

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,
‘You are my Son,
today I have begotten you’;
as he says also in another place,
‘You are a priest for ever,
according to the order of Melchizedek.’

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 5.1-10)

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: BENEDICTUS – THE SONG OF ZECHARIAH

Blessèd are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.

  1. Blessèd be the Lord God of Israel,
    for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them.
  2. He has raised up a mighty saviour for us
    in the house of his servant David,
  3. as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
  4. that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.
  5. Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors,
    and has remembered his holy covenant,
  6. the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham,
    to grant us
  7. that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies,
    might serve him without fear,
  8. in holiness and righteousness
    before him all our days.
  9. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
    for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
  10. to give knowledge of salvation to his people
    by the forgiveness of their sins.
  11. By the tender mercy of our God,
    the dawn from on high will break upon us,
  12. to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    to guide our feet into the way of peace.’ (St Luke 1.68-79)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Blessèd are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Trusting in the compassion of God,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God,
whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness,
and was tempted as we are, yet without sin:
give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit;
and, as you know our weakness,
so may we know your power to save;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
