Evening Prayer 16th March 2017

THE PREPARATION

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Let your ways be known upon earth,
your saving power among the nations.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

Psalm 74

  1. O God, why do you cast us off for ever?
    Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture?
  2. Remember your congregation, which you acquired long ago,
    which you redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage.
    Remember Mount Zion, where you came to dwell.
  3. Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins;
    the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary.
  4. Your foes have roared within your holy place;
    they set up their emblems there.
  5. At the upper entrance they hacked
    the wooden trellis with axes.
  6. And then, with hatchets and hammers,
    they smashed all its carved work.
  7. They set your sanctuary on fire;
    they desecrated the dwelling-place of your name,
    bringing it to the ground.
  8. They said to themselves, ‘We will utterly subdue them’;
    they burned all the meeting-places of God in the land.
  9. We do not see our emblems;
    there is no longer any prophet,
    and there is no one among us who knows how long.
  10. How long, O God, is the foe to scoff?
    Is the enemy to revile your name for ever?
  11. Why do you hold back your hand;
    why do you keep your hand in your bosom?
  12. Yet God my King is from of old,
    working salvation in the earth.
  13. You divided the sea by your might;
    you broke the heads of the dragons in the waters.
  14. You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
    you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
  15. You cut openings for springs and torrents;
    you dried up ever-flowing streams.
  16. Yours is the day, yours also the night;
    you established the luminaries and the sun.
  17. You have fixed all the bounds of the earth;
    you made summer and winter.
  18. Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs,
    and an impious people reviles your name.
  19. Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild animals;
    do not forget the life of your poor for ever.
  20. Have regard for your covenant,
    for the dark places of the land are full of the haunts of violence.
  21. Do not let the downtrodden be put to shame;
    let the poor and needy praise your name.
  22. Rise up, O God, plead your cause;
    remember how the impious scoff at you all day long.
  23. Do not forget the clamour of your foes,
    the uproar of your adversaries that goes up continually.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished. Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomsoever he wishes. The Father judges no one but has given all judgement to the Son, so that all may honour the Son just as they honour the Father. Anyone who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent him. Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgement, but has passed from death to life.

‘Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; and he has given him authority to execute judgement, because he is the Son of Man. Do not be astonished at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and will come out—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. (St John 5.19-29)

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: MAGNIFICAT – THE SONG OF MARY

Come, let us return to the Lord,
for our God will richly pardon.

  1. And Mary said,
    ‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
  2. and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
  3. for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.
    Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
  4. for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.
  5. His mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.
  6. He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
  7. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
    and lifted up the lowly;
  8. he has filled the hungry with good things,
    and sent the rich away empty.
  9. He has helped his servant Israel,
    in remembrance of his mercy,
  10. according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
    to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’ (St Luke 1.46-55)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Come, let us return to the Lord,
for our God will richly pardon.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Trusting in the compassion of God,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God,
you show to those who are in error the light of your truth,
that they may return to the way of righteousness:
grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion,
that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession,
and follow all such things as are
agreeable to the same;
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
