Evening Prayer 20th March 2017

Joseph of Nazareth

THE PREPARATION

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

The Lord became the carpenter’s Son.
O come, let us worship.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

Psalm 34

  1. I will bless the Lord at all times;
    his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
  2. My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
    let the humble hear and be glad.
  3. O magnify the Lord with me,
    and let us exalt his name together.
  4. I sought the Lord, and he answered me,
    and delivered me from all my fears.
  5. Look to him, and be radiant;
    so your faces shall never be ashamed.
  6. This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord,
    and was saved from every trouble.
  7. The angel of the Lord encamps
    around those who fear him, and delivers them.
  8. O taste and see that the Lord is good;
    happy are those who take refuge in him.
  9. O fear the Lord, you his holy ones,
    for those who fear him have no want.
  10. The young lions suffer want and hunger,
    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
  11. Come, O children, listen to me;
    I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
  12. Which of you desires life,
    and covets many days to enjoy good?
  13. Keep your tongue from evil,
    and your lips from speaking deceit.
  14. Depart from evil, and do good;
    seek peace, and pursue it.
  15. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    and his ears are open to their cry.
  16. The face of the Lord is against evildoers,
    to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
  17. When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears,
    and rescues them from all their troubles.
  18. The Lord is near to the broken-hearted,
    and saves the crushed in spirit.
  19. Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
    but the Lord rescues them from them all.
  20. He keeps all their bones;
    not one of them will be broken.
  21. Evil brings death to the wicked,
    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
  22. The Lord redeems the life of his servants;
    none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands. Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the court; and he stood on it. Then he knelt on his knees in the presence of the whole assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands towards heaven. He said, ‘O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven or on earth, keeping covenant in steadfast love with your servants who walk before you with all their heart— you who have kept for your servant, my father David, what you promised to him. Indeed, you promised with your mouth and this day have fulfilled with your hand. Therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, keep for your servant, my father David, that which you promised him, saying, “There shall never fail you a successor before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children keep to their way, to walk in my law as you have walked before me.” Therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you promised to your servant David. (2 Chronicles 6.12-17)

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3.14-21)

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: MAGNIFICAT – THE SONG OF MARY

Joseph of Nazareth went up to Bethlehem
to be enrolled with Mary his betrothed,
who was with child.

  1. And Mary said,
    ‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
  2. and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
  3. for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.
    Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
  4. for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.
  5. His mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.
  6. He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
  7. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
    and lifted up the lowly;
  8. he has filled the hungry with good things,
    and sent the rich away empty.
  9. He has helped his servant Israel,
    in remembrance of his mercy,
  10. according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
    to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’ (St Luke 1.46-55)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

to be enrolled with Mary his betrothed,
who was with child.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

THE COLLECT

O God,
who from the family of your servant David
raised up Joseph
to be the guardian of your incarnate Son
and the spouse of his virgin mother:
Give us grace to imitate his uprightness of life
and his obedience to your commands;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
