Morning Prayer 30th March 2017

THE PREPARATION

O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Christ, though tempted like us, was without sin.
O come, let us worship.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

Psalm 69

  1. Save me, O God,
    for the waters have come up to my neck.
  2. I sink in deep mire,
    where there is no foothold;
    I have come into deep waters,
    and the flood sweeps over me.
  3. I am weary with my crying;
    my throat is parched.
    My eyes grow dim
    with waiting for my God.
  4. More in number than the hairs of my head
    are those who hate me without cause;
    many are those who would destroy me,
    my enemies who accuse me falsely.
    What I did not steal
    must I now restore?
  5. O God, you know my folly;
    the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.
  6. Do not let those who hope in you be put to shame because of me,
    O Lord God of hosts;
    do not let those who seek you be dishonoured because of me,
    O God of Israel.
  7. It is for your sake that I have borne reproach,
    that shame has covered my face.
  8. I have become a stranger to my kindred,
    an alien to my mother’s children.
  9. It is zeal for your house that has consumed me;
    the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
  10. When I humbled my soul with fasting,
    they insulted me for doing so.
  11. When I made sackcloth my clothing,
    I became a byword to them.
  12. I am the subject of gossip for those who sit in the gate,
    and the drunkards make songs about me.
  13. But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
    At an acceptable time, O God,
    in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me.
    With your faithful help
  14. rescue me
    from sinking in the mire;
    let me be delivered from my enemies
    and from the deep waters.
  15. Do not let the flood sweep over me,
    or the deep swallow me up,
    or the Pit close its mouth over me.
  16. Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;
    according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
  17. Do not hide your face from your servant,
    for I am in distress—make haste to answer me.
  18. Draw near to me, redeem me,
    set me free because of my enemies.
  19. You know the insults I receive,
    and my shame and dishonour;
    my foes are all known to you.
  20. Insults have broken my heart,
    so that I am in despair.
    I looked for pity, but there was none;
    and for comforters, but I found none.
  21. They gave me poison for food,
    and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
  22. Let their table be a trap for them,
    a snare for their allies.
  23. Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
    and make their loins tremble continually.
  24. Pour out your indignation upon them,
    and let your burning anger overtake them.
  25. May their camp be a desolation;
    let no one live in their tents.
  26. For they persecute those whom you have struck down,
    and those whom you have wounded, they attack still more.
  27. Add guilt to their guilt;
    may they have no acquittal from you.
  28. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living;
    let them not be enrolled among the righteous.
  29. But I am lowly and in pain;
    let your salvation, O God, protect me.
  30. I will praise the name of God with a song;
    I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
  31. This will please the Lord more than an ox
    or a bull with horns and hoofs.
  32. Let the oppressed see it and be glad;
    you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
  33. For the Lord hears the needy,
    and does not despise his own that are in bonds.
  34. Let heaven and earth praise him,
    the seas and everything that moves in them.
  35. For God will save Zion
    and rebuild the cities of Judah;
    and his servants shall live there and possess it;
  36. the children of his servants shall inherit it,
    and those who love his name shall live in it.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness,
and his upper rooms by injustice;
who makes his neighbours work for nothing,
and does not give them their wages;
who says, ‘I will build myself a spacious house
with large upper rooms’,
and who cuts out windows for it,
panelling it with cedar,
and painting it with vermilion.
Are you a king
because you compete in cedar?
Did not your father eat and drink
and do justice and righteousness?
Then it was well with him.
He judged the cause of the poor and needy;
then it was well.
Is not this to know me?
says the Lord.
But your eyes and heart
are only on your dishonest gain,
for shedding innocent blood,
and for practising oppression and violence.

Therefore thus says the Lord concerning King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah:
They shall not lament for him, saying,
‘Alas, my brother!’ or ‘Alas, sister!’
They shall not lament for him, saying,
‘Alas, lord!’ or ‘Alas, his majesty!’
With the burial of a donkey he shall be buried—
dragged off and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

Go up to Lebanon, and cry out,
and lift up your voice in Bashan;
cry out from Abarim,
for all your lovers are crushed.
I spoke to you in your prosperity,
but you said, ‘I will not listen.’
This has been your way from your youth,
for you have not obeyed my voice.
The wind shall shepherd all your shepherds,
and your lovers shall go into captivity;
then you will be ashamed and dismayed
because of all your wickedness.
O inhabitant of Lebanon,
nested among the cedars,
how you will groan when pangs come upon you,
pain as of a woman in labour! (Jeremiah 22.13-23)

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8.12-27)

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: BENEDICTUS – THE SONG OF ZECHARIAH

Blessèd are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.

  1. Blessèd be the Lord God of Israel,for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them.
  2. He has raised up a mighty saviour for usin the house of his servant David,
  3. as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
  4. that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.
  5. Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors,and has remembered his holy covenant,
  6. the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham,to grant us
  7. that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies,might serve him without fear,
  8. in holiness and righteousnessbefore him all our days.
  9. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
  10. to give knowledge of salvation to his peopleby the forgiveness of their sins.
  11. By the tender mercy of our God,the dawn from on high will break upon us,
  12. to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,to guide our feet into the way of peace.’ (St Luke 1.68-79)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Blessèd are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Trusting in the compassion of God,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

THE COLLECT

Merciful Lord,
absolve your people from their offences,
that through your bountiful goodness
we may all be delivered from the chains of those sins
which by our frailty we have committed;
grant this, heavenly Father,
for Jesus Christ’s sake, our blessèd Lord and Saviour,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
