Evening Prayer 1st April 2017

THE PREPARATION

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Let your ways be known upon earth,
your saving power among the nations.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

Psalm 33

  1. Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous.
    Praise befits the upright.
  2. Praise the Lord with the lyre;
    make melody to him with the harp of ten strings.
  3. Sing to him a new song;
    play skilfully on the strings, with loud shouts.
  4. For the word of the Lord is upright,
    and all his work is done in faithfulness.
  5. He loves righteousness and justice;
    the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.
  6. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
    and all their host by the breath of his mouth.
  7. He gathered the waters of the sea as in a bottle;
    he put the deeps in storehouses.
  8. Let all the earth fear the Lord;
    let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
  9. For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded, and it stood firm.
  10. The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
    he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
  11. The counsel of the Lord stands for ever,
    the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
  12. Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.
  13. The Lord looks down from heaven;
    he sees all humankind.
  14. From where he sits enthroned he watches
    all the inhabitants of the earth—
  15. he who fashions the hearts of them all,
    and observes all their deeds.
  16. A king is not saved by his great army;
    a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
  17. The war horse is a vain hope for victory,
    and by its great might it cannot save.
  18. Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
    on those who hope in his steadfast love,
  19. to deliver their soul from death,
    and to keep them alive in famine.
  20. Our soul waits for the Lord;
    he is our help and shield.
  21. Our heart is glad in him,
    because we trust in his holy name.
  22. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

When many of his disciples heard it, they said, ‘This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?’ But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, ‘Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, ‘For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.’

Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.’ Jesus answered them, ‘Did I not choose you, the twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.’ He was speaking of Judas son of Simon Iscariot, for he, though one of the twelve, was going to betray him. (St John 6.60-71)

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: MAGNIFICAT – THE SONG OF MARY

Come, let us return to the Lord,
for our God will richly pardon.

  1. And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
  2. and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
  3. for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
  4. for the Mighty One has done great things for me,and holy is his name.
  5. His mercy is for those who fear himfrom generation to generation.
  6. He has shown strength with his arm;he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
  7. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,and lifted up the lowly;
  8. he has filled the hungry with good things,and sent the rich away empty.
  9. He has helped his servant Israel,in remembrance of his mercy,
  10. according to the promise he made to our ancestors,to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’ (St Luke 1.46-55)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Come, let us return to the Lord,
for our God will richly pardon.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Trusting in the compassion of God,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

THE COLLECT

Most merciful God,
who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ,
delivered and saved the world:
grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross
we may triumph in the power of his victory;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
