THE PREPARATION

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Let your ways be known upon earth,
your saving power among the nations.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

  1. I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name for ever and ever.
  2. Every day I will bless you,
and praise your name for ever and ever.
  3. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
    his greatness is unsearchable.
  4. One generation shall laud your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
  5. On the glorious splendour of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
  6. The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed,
and I will declare your greatness.
  7. They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness,
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
  8. The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
  9. The Lord is good to all,
and his compassion is over all that he has made.
  10. All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your faithful shall bless you.

    and tell of your power,
  12. to make known to all people your mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendour of your kingdom.
  13. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
The Lord is faithful in all his words,
and gracious in all his deeds.
  14. The Lord upholds all who are falling,
and raises up all who are bowed down.
  15. The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
  16. You open your hand,
satisfying the desire of every living thing.
  17. The Lord is just in all his ways,
and kind in all his doings.
  18. The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
  19. He fulfils the desire of all who fear him;
he also hears their cry, and saves them.
  20. The Lord watches over all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.
  21. My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’ And he said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.’ (St Mark 8.31-9.1)

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: MAGNIFICAT – THE SONG OF MARY

God’s love for us is revealed
in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.

  1. And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
  2. and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
  3. for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
  4. for the Mighty One has done great things for me,and holy is his name.
  5. His mercy is for those who fear himfrom generation to generation.
  6. He has shown strength with his arm;he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
  7. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,and lifted up the lowly;
  8. he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.
  9. He has helped his servant Israel,in remembrance of his mercy,
  10. according to the promise he made to our ancestors,to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’ (St Luke 1.46-55)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

God’s love for us is revealed
in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Trusting in the compassion of God,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

THE COLLECT

Most merciful God,
who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ,
delivered and saved the world:
grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross
we may triumph in the power of his victory;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
