Evening Prayer 11th April 2017

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Let your ways be known upon earth,
your saving power among the nations.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 94

  1. O Lord, you God of vengeance,
    you God of vengeance, shine forth!
  2. Rise up, O judge of the earth;
    give to the proud what they deserve!
  3. O Lord, how long shall the wicked,
    how long shall the wicked exult?
  4. They pour out their arrogant words;
    all the evildoers boast.
  5. They crush your people, O Lord,
    and afflict your heritage.
  6. They kill the widow and the stranger,
    they murder the orphan,
  7. and they say, ‘The Lord does not see;
    the God of Jacob does not perceive.’
  8. Understand, O dullest of the people;
    fools, when will you be wise?
  9. He who planted the ear, does he not hear?
    He who formed the eye, does he not see?
  10. He who disciplines the nations,
    he who teaches knowledge to humankind,
    does he not chastise?
  11. The Lord knows our thoughts,
    that they are but an empty breath.
  12. Happy are those whom you discipline, O Lord,
    and whom you teach out of your law,
  13. giving them respite from days of trouble,
    until a pit is dug for the wicked.
  14. For the Lord will not forsake his people;
    he will not abandon his heritage;
  15. for justice will return to the righteous,
    and all the upright in heart will follow it.
  16. Who rises up for me against the wicked?
    Who stands up for me against evildoers?
  17. If the Lord had not been my help,
    my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence.
  18. When I thought, ‘My foot is slipping’,
    your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up.
  19. When the cares of my heart are many,
    your consolations cheer my soul.
  20. Can wicked rulers be allied with you,
    those who contrive mischief by statute?
  21. They band together against the life of the righteous,
    and condemn the innocent to death.
  22. But the Lord has become my stronghold,
    and my God the rock of my refuge.
  23. He will repay them for their iniquity
    and wipe them out for their wickedness;
    the Lord our God will wipe them out.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. (St John 12.20-26)

God’s love for us is revealed
in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.

  1. And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
  2. and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
  3. for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
  4. for the Mighty One has done great things for me,and holy is his name.
  5. His mercy is for those who fear himfrom generation to generation.
  6. He has shown strength with his arm;he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
  7. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,and lifted up the lowly;
  8. he has filled the hungry with good things,and sent the rich away empty.
  9. He has helped his servant Israel,in remembrance of his mercy,
  10. according to the promise he made to our ancestors,to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’ (St Luke 1.46-55)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

God’s love for us is revealed
in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Trusting in the compassion of God,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

Almighty and everlasting God,
who in your tender love towards the human race sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ
to take upon him our flesh
and to suffer death upon the cross:
grant that we may follow the example of
his patience and humility,
and also be made partakers of his
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
