Evening Prayer 13th April 2017

THE PREPARATION

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Christ the Lord was tempted and suffered for us.
O come, let us worship.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

Psalm 142

  1. With my voice I cry to the Lord;
    with my voice I make supplication to the Lord.
  2. I pour out my complaint before him;
    I tell my trouble before him.
  3. When my spirit is faint,
    you know my way.
    In the path where I walk
    they have hidden a trap for me.
  4. Look on my right hand and see—
    there is no one who takes notice of me;
    no refuge remains to me;
    no one cares for me.
  5. I cry to you, O Lord;
    I say, ‘You are my refuge,
    my portion in the land of the living.’
  6. Give heed to my cry,
    for I am brought very low.
    Save me from my persecutors,
    for they are too strong for me.
  7. Bring me out of prison,
    so that I may give thanks to your name.
    The righteous will surround me,
    for you will deal bountifully with me.

Psalm 143

  1. Hear my prayer, O Lord;
    give ear to my supplications in your faithfulness;
    answer me in your righteousness.
  2. Do not enter into judgement with your servant,
    for no one living is righteous before you.
  3. For the enemy has pursued me,
    crushing my life to the ground,
    making me sit in darkness like those long dead.
  4. Therefore my spirit faints within me;
    my heart within me is appalled.
  5. I remember the days of old,
    I think about all your deeds,
    I meditate on the works of your hands.
  6. I stretch out my hands to you;
    my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
    Selah
  7. Answer me quickly, O Lord;
    my spirit fails.
    Do not hide your face from me,
    or I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.
  8. Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
    for in you I put my trust.
    Teach me the way I should go,
    for to you I lift up my soul.
  9. Save me, O Lord, from my enemies;
    I have fled to you for refuge.
  10. Teach me to do your will,
    for you are my God.
    Let your good spirit lead me
    on a level path.
  11. For your name’s sake, O Lord, preserve my life.
    In your righteousness bring me out of trouble.
  12. In your steadfast love cut off my enemies,
    and destroy all my adversaries,
    for I am your servant.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.  (St John 17.1-11)

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: MAGNIFICAT – THE SONG OF MARY

Christ humbled himself for us,
and in obedience accepted death.

  1. And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
  2. and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
  3. for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
  4. for the Mighty One has done great things for me,and holy is his name.
  5. His mercy is for those who fear himfrom generation to generation.
  6. He has shown strength with his arm;he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
  7. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,and lifted up the lowly;
  8. he has filled the hungry with good things,and sent the rich away empty.
  9. He has helped his servant Israel,in remembrance of his mercy,
  10. according to the promise he made to our ancestors,to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’ (St Luke 1.46-55)

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Christ humbled himself for us,
and in obedience accepted death.

THE PRAYERS

THE KYRIES

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Standing at the foot of the cross,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

THE COLLECT

Almighty Father,
whose Son Jesus Christ has taught us
that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters
we do also for him:
give us the will to be the servant of others as he was the servant of all,
who gave up his life and died for us,
yet is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
